In a major crackdown on illegal online activities, the Indian government has blocked 232 overseas-based apps, including Chinese, for their involvement in betting, gambling, and unauthorized loan services. The Ministry of Electronics and IT carried out the ban on the apps following instructions from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
According to an official source, 138 of the blocked apps were involved in betting, gambling, and money laundering, while the remaining 94 apps provided unauthorized loan services. These apps, operated from offshore entities, posed a threat to the country’s economic stability, the official said.
The official declined to reveal the names of the banned apps, and a request for information sent to the Ministry of Electronics and IT went unanswered. This move is seen as a step towards ensuring the safety and stability of the Indian economy and combating illegal online activities.
