Rocket sirens echoed through southern Israel once again as the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) launches a series of airstrikes against militant sites in the Gaza Strip. The move is in response to the firing of a rocket by Palestinian militants towards southern Israel on Saturday evening. The Israeli air defenses successfully intercepted the rocket.
According to the Jerusalem Post, sirens were activated and a red alert was given in Ruchama near the Gaza Strip on Monday morning following the rocket attack. Meanwhile, violent clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians were reported in Nablus in the West Bank, leading to the death of one Palestinian. The firefight was said to be happening around a house in Nablus surrounded by Israeli forces, according to journalist Tzvi Joffre of the Jerusalem Post.
The Israeli military has stated that the airstrikes targeted an underground rocket manufacturing complex run by Hamas, the militant group in control of Gaza. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
The current wave of violence in the region can be traced back to the recent surge in tensions between Israel and the Palestinians in the West Bank and east Jerusalem. The Gaza-Israel frontier had been relatively peaceful in recent months, but sporadic rocket fire and airstrikes have been reported.
