Harvinder Singh, IAS: Defying Odds, From Childhood Tragedy to Administrative Triumph

In a tale that embodies the triumph of the human spirit, Harvinder Singh, the 2019 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, has overcome adversity at every turn to ascend to the role of Deputy Commissioner in Doda, Jammu and Kashmir. His journey is not just a narrative of professional success but an inspiring testament to resilience and unwavering determination.

Early Ambitions and Childhood Setback

Harvinder’s childhood dream, as an alumni of Sainik School Nagrota, was to join the Indian Army, a passion that persisted despite a life-altering accident. Recounting the incident, he reveals, “Three fingers of my hand could never straighten after they were accidentally immersed in hot oil during my childhood.” Undeterred, his indomitable spirit spurred him to pursue his dreams against all odds.

In pursuit of his aspirations, Harvinder attempted the National Defence Academy (NDA) exam, succeeding in his first try. However, a medical disqualification threatened to shatter his dreams. The authorities recommended surgery as a potential remedy, and with determination burning bright, Harvinder underwent the procedure.

Undaunted by setbacks, Harvinder made a courageous comeback, attempting the NDA exam once again. But this time again, another disqualification on medical grounds barred him to join Indian Defence Forces back in 2009. However his persistence paid off 10 years later, demonstrating that resilience and tenacity could indeed rewrite one’s destiny. His success in the UPSC Civil Services exam in 2018 marked the turning point in his professional journey.

From a temporary lecturer in the Government College of Engineering & Technology, Jammu, to a Civil Engineer in diverse locations like Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, Harvinder’s diverse professional background laid the foundation for his role as an Junior Engineer. Later his success in the JKPSC AE Exam in 2017 further propelled his ascent.

The culmination of Harvinder Singh’s journey as an IAS Officer led to his appointment as the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) in Uri, Baramulla district, in 2019. People of Uri fondly remember him as a public friendly officer. Currently serving as the Deputy Commissioner in Doda, his administrative prowess and dedication underscore his commitment to public service and governance.

Harvinder Singh’s life story is more than a series of achievements; it is a source of inspiration for those facing daunting challenges. His journey from a childhood tragedy to becoming a stalwart in the Indian Administrative Service illustrates the transformative power of resilience and unwavering determination. In every setback, Harvinder found the strength to rise, proving that the human spirit can indeed conquer all odds. His story resonates as a beacon of hope and a reminder that setbacks are not roadblocks but opportunities for resilient comebacks.
