THE PHEASANT ISLAND
Pheasant Island is an uninhabited river island in the Bidasoa river, located between France and Spain, whose administration alternates between both nations.

The pheasant island was established as a condominium, a territory administered by multiple countries.
With over 350 years of joint sovereignty.
It was the oldest condominium in the world.
The Treaty of the Pyrenees was signed on 7 November 1659, and ended the 1635 to 1659 Franco-Spanish war. Negotiations were conducted on Pheasant Island, situated in the middle of the Bidasoa river on the border between the two countries, which has remained a French-Spanish condominium ever since.
This island is sometimes under
French and sometimes under Spain . That means for 6 months, 1 February to 31 July , its under the spanish rule and for other six months from 1 August to 31 January, its comes under French rule.
This all means that the territory area of these countries shift over 6,820 depending on the times of years. The Pheasant Island is just over 200m long and 40m wide, in the middle of Bidasoa river between the French town of Handaye and Irun in Spain.
The peace agreement was signed and the deal was sealed with the royal wedding of King Louis XIV with Spanish King Philip IV’s daughter Maria Theresa of Spain (Spanish: María Teresa de Austria;) (French: Marie-Thérèse d’Autriche).
Pheasant Island is eroding as snowmelt rushes down from Pyrenees and into the Bidasoa river, leading the rise of water level.
