Eat more beef than chicken, mutton, fish: Meghalaya BJP Minister

A BJP minister in Meghalaya is encouraging people to eat more beef than chicken, mutton, or fish.

Sanbor Shullai, a BJP minister in the Meghalaya government, encouraged people in the state to eat more beef than chicken, mutton, or fish, dispelling the myth that his party was anti-beef.

Shullai, a senior BJP leader who was sworn in as a cabinet minister last week, said that in a democratic country, everyone is free to eat whatever they want.

“I encourage people to eat more beef than chicken, mutton, or fish,” he told reporters on Friday. “By encouraging people to eat more beef, the perception that the BJP will impose a ban on cow slaughter will be dispelled.”

Shullai, who is also the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister, promised that he would speak with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to ensure that cattle transportation to Meghalaya was not hampered by the state’s new cow legislation.

The three-term legislator said it was past time for the state to use its police force to protect the border and its people in the tense boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam.

“If the people of Assam continue to harass our people on the border, it is no longer enough to talk and drink tea… We must react, we must act on the spot,” he said.

He did clarify, however, that he was not pro-violence.

“We must have the spirit to protect our people; we must use our force — the police should go to the front to speak with the Assam Police,” he said.

The BJP minister praised the Mizoram Police for “standing up to protect” its land and people, but chastised the Meghalaya Police for always being “on the backfoot” when it comes to border residents.

“We’ve seen it before — the police are in the back and the civilians are in the front,” he said, adding that “the higher-ups should give orders that the police be in the front to protect the people.”

“If your enemies come to your house and attack you, your wife, and your children, you must defend yourself; the same should be done at our borders… If your enemy comes to your house to steal or rob your house, you must defend yourself, whether it is legal or illegal,” Shullai asserted.

He stated that the border dispute has been pending for a long time and must be resolved as soon as possible.

“Many political parties have pledged in their manifestos that if they win power, they will resolve the issue — but it’s been more than 50 years, and no party has been able to do so, so we need to do a post-mortem on the problem,” he said.
