Official sources said on Wednesday that a police follower was slain in the Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district last night after his colleague allegedly fired at him as a suspected person.
According to them, the deceased policeman identified as Vijay Dhar, son of late Krishen Lal Dhar of Langate Handwara, attempted to force his way into a temple in the area, but his colleague mistook him for a militant and opened fire.
Dhar was rushed to District Hospital Handwara, where he was treated before being transferred to SKIMS Soura, where he died, according to officials.
According to preliminary investigations, the deceased was wearing headphones in his ears and did not reply to loud summons from his colleague, prompting temple guards to fire at him.
“In an unfortunate incident last night, one Policeman Posted at PS Handwara Ajay Dhar s/o Lt Krishen Lal Dhar r/o Langate Handwara succumbed to a bullet injury he received while attempting to forcefully enter into the temple in the dead of night,” DIG North Kashmir said, adding, “The sentry, assuming it was an attack by ANEs (anti-national elements), opened fire.”
