In a live broadcast by The Chenab Times on Facebook, fresh landslides were reported on the Batote-Kishtwar National Highway at Thathri. The area has been experiencing land subsidence for the past week and at least 23 structures, including 21 residential houses in Nayi Basti area of Thathri town in Doda district, have been damaged as a result. Sadly, three houses have completely collapsed so far.
In response to the situation, the District Magistrate of Doda has issued an order to temporarily suspend traffic on the Pul-Doda to Kishtwar highway in order to clear the debris and ensure the safety of passengers. The order states that fresh intimation will be given after the slide has been cleared.
According to the report, local residents are extremely concerned about their safety as the landslides continue to occur. The authorities have been informed about the situation and efforts are underway to assess the damage and provide assistance to those affected.
The Batote-Kishtwar National Highway is a crucial road link connecting several remote and mountainous regions of Jammu and Kashmir. The highway is frequently used by local residents and tourists and its closure due to landslides can cause severe disruptions.
The authorities are urging people to be cautious and avoid the affected areas until the situation stabilizes. The local administration is closely monitoring the situation and efforts are being made to ensure the safety of the people and their property.
Noted geologist Professor G.M Bhat has warned of the risk of a massive landslide in the Thathri area of Doda district, Jammu and Kashmir, as cracks in the area have not been filled. Professor Bhat told The Chenab Times that the mosque area in particular, which has already been declared an unsafe zone, is particularly vulnerable to landsliding. Professor Bhat’s warning serves as a reminder of the importance of taking swift action to address the potential dangers posed by land subsidence and landslides in the region.
