In a significant breakthrough in anti-militancy operations, law enforcement authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have reportedly unearthed the hideout of Jehangir Saroori, the longest-surviving militant associated with the Hizbul Mujahideen. The operation, allegedly carried out by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, in collaboration with troops from Rashtriya Rifles and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), took place on September 5 in the Paribag area of Bhadat Saroor.
Saroori, who is said to have joined the ranks of the militant organization in the early 1990s, had allegedly been evading capture while hiding in the remote and treacherous terrains of Kishtwar district. Notably, his brother, Abdul Karim Butt, a known militant associate, was apprehended and detained under the stringent Public Safety Act on August 3.
Senior Superintendent of Police in Kishtwar, Khalil Poswal, has alleged that the discovery of Saroori’s hideout is a pivotal development in the fight against militancy in the region. He stated that intelligence had allegedly suggested Saroori was utilizing the hideout as a base for planning subversive activities.
During the search operation, law enforcement allegedly recovered two blankets, food supplies, and personal items from the hideout, allegedly corroborating the presence of the fugitive militant in the area. The entire vicinity has allegedly been cordoned off, and thorough searches are allegedly ongoing to ensure the safety and security of the region’s residents.
Poswal emphasized the mission of safeguarding citizens, emphasizing the success of this operation as a testament to ongoing efforts to eradicate terrorism from the area. He urged the public to remain vigilant and allegedly report any suspicious activities promptly.
In a related incident, a separate encounter with security forces allegedly occurred on September 4 in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district, allegedly resulting in the neutralization of at least one militant. Additionally, a police officer allegedly sustained injuries during the security operation.
According to police sources, the encounter unfolded when two militants allegedly entered a house belonging to a policeman, seeking shelter and food. The police officer allegedly promptly informed the department about the presence of the militants in his residence. Subsequently, a joint operation was initiated by the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Army, which is allegedly still underway as they allegedly continue to maintain a strong presence in the area.
