The Aam Aadmi Party Jammu and Kashmir unit submitted a formal complaint at Police Post Bathindi, demanding registration of an FIR against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for allegedly violating a woman’s dignity and religious freedom during a public event. The incident involved Kumar pulling down the veil of a Muslim woman doctor.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, AAP leaders described the act as an assault on constitutional rights and urged the invocation of sections under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023. These include Section 74 on assault to outrage modesty, Section 76 on acts insulting a woman’s modesty, and Section 196 on acts prejudicial to harmony.
The complaint cited Articles 14, 19, 21 and 25 of the Constitution, guaranteeing equality, personal liberty, dignity, and religious freedom. Leaders called for an impartial investigation and strict action to uphold the rule of law.
The submission was made by Yasir Shafi Matoo, Amir Malik, Owais Choudhary, Sujan Singh, Mudasir Hassan, Mudasir Butt, Raja Shakeel and Danish Hussain, along with other party workers. AAP spokesperson Muddasir Hassan stated in a press note that wearing hijab is a constitutional right and interference is unacceptable.
Raja Shakeel, constituency spokesperson for Doda 52, told The Chenab Times the incident is an attack on women’s dignity and is irresponsible for a state head. He also condemned remarks by Union Minister Giriraj Singh as divisive.
The incident occurred on December 16 during the distribution of appointment letters to AYUSH doctors in Patna. A viral video showed Kumar gesturing and removing the veil, sparking nationwide outrage.
Opposition parties, including RJD and Congress, demanded Kumar’s resignation. Former actress Zaira Wasim called for an unconditional apology. Amnesty International urged condemnation.
Separate complaints led to an FIR in Lucknow by a Samajwadi Party leader. Investigations continue amid debates on women’s rights and religious freedom.
