Over 250 U.S. Organizations Urge Congress to Reject Funding for U.S.-Israel War on Iran

More than 250 American civil society groups have called on Congress to block any additional funding for the ongoing U.S.-Israel military campaign against Iran, arguing that billions in taxpayer dollars are being diverted from critical domestic priorities amid escalating costs and lack of congressional authorization.

The coalition’s letter, delivered to lawmakers this week, demands that members vote against supplemental appropriations to sustain or expand the conflict, which the signatories describe as unconstitutional, unauthorized, and contrary to U.S. interests. The groups warn that further funding would prolong an unpopular war, increase risks of broader escalation, and exacerbate economic pressures on American households.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the letter was organized by Public Citizen, Win Without War, MoveOn, and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Among the prominent signatories are Oxfam America, Service Employees International Union, National Nurses United, Council on American-Islamic Relations, National Organization for Women, Union of Concerned Scientists, J Street, Greenpeace, Friends of the Earth, Indivisible, Common Cause, Jewish Voice for Peace, Rising Majority, and Working Families Power.

The organizations highlight the war’s mounting financial burden, now in its second week. Pentagon briefings to Congress indicate that operations in the first six days alone cost $11.3 billion, primarily for munitions, airstrikes, and related military requirements. Estimates suggest daily expenditures approaching $1 billion, with a potential supplemental package under consideration exceeding $50 billion.

Robert Weissman, co-president of Public Citizen, emphasized the domestic trade-offs. “More money for the Pentagon will serve to extend and escalate an illegal, unpopular, and devastating war – as well as pave the way for still more Pentagon funding requests,” Weissman said. He noted that the initial $11.3 billion outlay “would, for example, be enough to restore food benefits to the four million people losing them due to the tax and budget reconciliation bill.”

The coalition points out that a $50 billion supplemental could instead fund substantial domestic investments, such as restoring food assistance for millions of Americans, establishing universal pre-kindergarten programs, or supporting the annual construction of more than 100,000 affordable housing units. They argue that continued military spending ignores urgent needs in health care, economic relief, and infrastructure at a time of widespread financial strain for many U.S. families.

The letter characterizes the conflict as a “war of choice” that violates constitutional requirements for congressional approval of military action and contravenes international law. It has produced casualties on multiple sides, including reported deaths among U.S. service members and significant losses in the region, while heightening the potential for further regional instability.

This push comes amid active congressional debates over the war’s legality and financing. Recent War Powers Resolutions, introduced on a bipartisan basis to curb or terminate U.S. involvement absent explicit authorization, were narrowly defeated in votes earlier this month. The administration has not yet formally requested emergency funds, but expectations of such a request persist as operations continue.

The signatories stress that redirecting resources inward would better serve American security and prosperity than pursuing prolonged engagement in the Middle East. As lawmakers weigh potential funding measures, the broad coalition’s opposition underscores growing civil society resistance to additional military expenditures abroad.
