BIHAR SHARIF (BIHAR), March 31: At least eight women died in a stampede at the Shitala Mata temple in Bihar’s Nalanda district on Tuesday, according to police officials. The incident occurred amidst a heavy rush of devotees at the temple on Tuesday morning.
Stampede Details Emerge
Assistant Superintendent of Police for Bihar Sharif, Noorul Haque, confirmed the fatalities, stating that eight women lost their lives in the stampede. The Chenab Times has learned that the temple, dedicated to Shitala Mata, a Hindu goddess often associated with the monsoon and diseases, was thronged with worshippers on Tuesday. The sudden surge in the number of people, possibly during a religious ritual or auspicious timing, led to the unfortunate incident. The ensuing chaos and overcrowding resulted in the fatal stampede.
District Administration Responds
Emergency services and district authorities promptly responded to the situation, arriving at the temple premises to manage the aftermath. Efforts were focused on ensuring the safety of devotees present and attending to any injured individuals. The local administration is expected to provide further details as the investigation progresses and more information becomes available regarding the sequence of events that led to the stampede. The exact number of devotees present at the time of the incident is being assessed, and authorities are working to identify all victims and inform their families.
The Shitala Mata temple is a significant religious site in Nalanda district, attracting devotees from surrounding areas, especially during festivals and specific days considered auspicious. The incident raises concerns about crowd management at religious gatherings and the need for robust safety protocols to prevent such unfortunate events in the future. Investigations will likely focus on assessing whether adequate security measures and crowd control arrangements were in place to handle the expected influx of worshippers.
