Jammu and Kashmir: Four School Buildings in Budgam Declared Unsafe, Reconstruction Underway

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced that four school buildings in the Budgam constituency have been identified as unsafe and are slated for reconstruction under various government schemes. The announcement was made in the Legislative Assembly, outlining steps being taken to address infrastructure concerns in educational facilities.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Public Works (Roads and Buildings) Department identified the dilapidated school structures. Responding to an unstarred question raised by MLA Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi, the government detailed the planned interventions.

A new building for the Middle School at CI Dass, falling under Zone Soibugh, has already received approval for construction during the current financial year, 2025-26. This project is being funded under the Samagra Shiksha Scheme, an overarching program for school education.

For other schools designated as unsafe, the government stated that proposals for new building constructions will be submitted under the Samagra Shiksha Scheme and the UT Capex Budget for the 2026-27 financial year. These future projects will be contingent upon the availability of necessary funds.

In addition to the immediate concerns regarding unsafe structures, the government also provided an update on the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 within the Budgam constituency. Significant infrastructural developments have been noted since the 2022-23 academic year.

A total of 209 kindergartens have been established across the Budgam district. Of these, 30 are specifically located within the Budgam constituency, aiming to enhance early childhood education facilities. Furthermore, 15 hybrid classrooms have been established during the current financial year. These classrooms, developed at a cost of Rs 8 lakh, are distributed across all zones of the Budgam constituency and currently serve over 2,100 students.

Under other components of the NEP-2020, three PM SHRI schools have been established. These schools are envisioned to be model schools, showcasing the best practices in education. Vocational education has also been expanded, reaching 17 schools within the district.

To bolster foundational learning, 438 teachers have undergone training programs focused on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN). This initiative aims to strengthen early grade learning outcomes for students.

The government has also prioritized the establishment of advanced learning facilities. This includes the setup of five astrophysics labs, 31 ICT (Information and Communication Technology)/CAL (Computer-Aided Learning) labs, and one Atal Tinkering Lab. These facilities are intended to promote digital literacy and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) based learning among students in the constituency.
