Three foreign nationals have been apprehended in Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh, with a significant quantity of opium and a substantial amount of cash. The arrests were made in the Narkanda area following a tip-off regarding the presence of individuals trafficking narcotics.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the operation was conducted by the Special Cell of the police. Authorities intercepted a vehicle carrying the suspects and discovered 9.28 kilograms of opium along with approximately ₹12 lakh in cash. The individuals have been identified as N Bahadur alias Raju, aged 41; Chakra Bahadur, aged 25; and Mohan Sahi, aged 44, all reportedly natives of Nepal.
The police received specific intelligence that a group of individuals was present in the Narkanda region with a large consignment of opium. In response, a team from the Special Cell was dispatched to the location. Officers established a checkpoint near Narkanda and stopped a vehicle for inspection.
During the search of the vehicle and its occupants, police found the contraband and the cash. The suspects were subsequently arrested on the spot. The total value of the seized opium is yet to be officially ascertained, but it represents a significant haul for law enforcement agencies operating in the region.
The Shimla Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Gaurav Singh, confirmed the arrests and the seizure. He stated that a case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. Specifically, sections 18 and 29 of the act are likely to be invoked, dealing with the cultivation, manufacture, possession, sale, purchase, transport, use, consumption, and inter-state import/export of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, and abetment and criminal conspiracy related to drug trafficking, respectively.
The police are continuing their investigation into the matter. Authorities are working to determine the origin of the opium and its intended destination. Investigations are also focused on uncovering any potential wider network of individuals involved in drug smuggling operations in the state and beyond. The SSP indicated that inquiries are ongoing to identify any possible links to other individuals or groups engaged in similar illegal activities.
Himachal Pradesh has historically been a transit route and a point of concern for drug trafficking, with law enforcement agencies frequently conducting operations to curb the flow of narcotics. The seizure in Narkanda highlights the persistent challenges faced by authorities in combating the drug trade, even in remote and tourist-popular areas. The recovery of a large sum of cash alongside the drugs suggests that the arrested individuals were potentially part of a well-established smuggling ring.
The NDPS Act carries stringent penalties for offenders, reflecting the seriousness with which drug trafficking is viewed in India. The ongoing investigation aims to gather sufficient evidence to prosecute the individuals involved and dismantle the network they represent. Further details are expected to emerge as the police continue their diligent efforts to unravel the full extent of the drug smuggling operation.
