Beijing on Tuesday emphasized the critical need to adhere to international law for maintaining stability in the Middle East. Chinese President Xi Jinping conveyed this message during a meeting with Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Ruler of Abu Dhabi, in the Chinese capital. The discussions took place against a backdrop of escalating regional tensions.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, President Xi stated that the principles of international law should not be applied selectively, warning against a descent into “the law of the jungle.” His remarks appeared to address the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Israel with Iran, a situation that has significantly impacted global energy flows and maritime security. Xi stressed that the rule of law cannot be invoked when convenient and disregarded when it is not.
The meeting occurred as tensions in the Gulf region have intensified following the collapse of recent diplomatic talks between Washington and Tehran. Since late February, Iran has disrupted shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz. In response, the United States has initiated a blockade of Iranian ports, citing accusations of “economic terrorism” against Tehran. This escalating conflict has led to a notable decline in Chinese oil and gas imports, with numerous vessels reportedly stranded in the vital waterway.
In parallel reporting, sources indicated that President Xi welcomed Sheikh Khaled and commended the robust and enduring relationship between China and the United Arab Emirates. He highlighted the importance of continued cooperation across economic, investment, and strategic sectors. The UAE Crown Prince conveyed greetings from UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and engaged in discussions focused on expanding bilateral ties between the two nations.
Both sides reportedly reviewed current regional and international developments. A key theme of their discussions was the significance of coordinated efforts to support peaceful conflict resolution and uphold global stability. The Chinese Embassy released a statement outlining President Xi’s reiteration of Beijing’s commitment to fostering peace through dialogue. He presented four foundational principles for ensuring stability in the Middle East: adherence to peaceful coexistence, respect for national sovereignty, commitment to international law, and the balancing of development with security.
President Xi further noted that China and the UAE intend to deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership. This deepened collaboration is expected to encompass expansion in energy, trade, technology, and people-to-people exchanges. He also advocated for enhanced coordination on multilateral platforms, including the United Nations and BRICS.
Sheikh Khaled, as per the Chinese statement, acknowledged China’s “constructive role” in global affairs. He expressed the UAE’s readiness to collaborate closely with Beijing to facilitate a ceasefire, ensure maritime security, and contribute to the stabilization of global energy markets. The visit underscores the growing economic and geopolitical alignment between China and several Gulf nations, with both parties signalling a mutual intent to bolster trade and investment ties while navigating the complexities of heightened instability in the Middle East.
