Leh, Ladakh: The Union Territory of Ladakh is set to witness a significant upgrade in its public transport infrastructure with the foundation stone laid for 30 smart bus shelters. Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena inaugurated the project on Monday, which will see 15 shelters established in Leh and an equal number in Kargil.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the initiative aims to provide safe, comfortable, and technologically advanced waiting areas for commuters, designed to withstand Ladakh’s challenging climatic conditions.
During the foundation stone laying ceremony, Lieutenant Governor Saxena emphasized that the project extends beyond mere construction, focusing on creating public transport facilities that are both sustainable and technologically equipped, aligning with the unique environmental demands of the region.
The smart bus shelters will offer protection from extreme cold, strong winds, and snowfall, providing a much-needed respite for passengers, particularly during the harsh winter months. Saxena expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their unwavering support in fostering the development of modern infrastructure and improving public amenities in Ladakh, thereby fulfilling the aspirations of its residents.
He further articulated that these shelters are envisioned as symbols of enhanced mobility, safety, technological integration, sustainability, and citizen-centric services for Ladakh. The administration’s objective is to develop infrastructure that is not only resilient to the local climate and environmentally friendly but also caters effectively to the daily needs of the populace.
The Lieutenant Governor urged the residents of Ladakh to actively participate in the upkeep of these new facilities, encouraging cooperation with the administration to ensure the shelters remain clean, well-maintained, and fully functional.
A spokesperson from Lok Bhavan highlighted that the project’s design specifically addresses the region’s difficult climate and the requirements of diverse user groups, including students, senior citizens, women, working professionals, and daily commuters who frequently endure prolonged waits in open spaces during severe winters. The development of these smart bus shelters represents a pivotal step towards establishing sustainable public transport infrastructure within the Union Territory.
The shelters are slated to be equipped with advanced passenger information and safety features. GPS-enabled passenger information display systems, LED screens, and real-time bus tracking with estimated time of arrival (ETA) functionalities will empower passengers with timely updates on bus routes and schedules. Enhancing passenger safety further, the shelters will incorporate CCTV surveillance, SOS/emergency buttons, first-aid kits, emergency oxygen cylinders, and fire extinguishers.
Inclusivity has also been a key consideration, with provisions for tactile tiles and accessible movement pathways designed to assist visually impaired passengers and others with mobility challenges.
A notable aspect of the project is its commitment to sustainability through solar power. Each bus shelter will be fitted with a 2 KW solar photovoltaic system, complemented by battery storage and a hybrid inverter. This solar energy system will power essential services like Wi-Fi and passenger information displays, reducing reliance on conventional grid electricity and lowering operational costs. This feature is integral to Ladakh’s vision of becoming a carbon-neutral region.
Furthermore, the architectural design of the shelters is intended to reflect the distinct Ladakhi character, harmoniously blending modern technological advancements with the region’s local identity and heritage. This approach ensures that the future infrastructure remains deeply rooted in Ladakh’s unique cultural ethos.
