Iranian Delegation Faced Elevated Security Risks During Return from Pakistan Talks

An Iranian delegation returning from negotiations in Pakistan faced significant security risks, including the potential for aerial attacks, necessitating complex travel arrangements to ensure their safe passage home. The elaborate precautions highlighted the volatile regional security environment following the inconclusive talks.

Delegation Employed Multi-Layered Security Measures

The Iranian delegation adopted a sophisticated, multi-layered travel strategy for their journey back to Tehran from Islamabad. This included switching aircraft mid-route and utilizing a combination of train and road transport to evade potential threats and minimize the risk of any aerial or covert strikes. These extensive measures underscored the precarious security situation and the perceived threats directed at Iran’s senior leadership.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, Professor Mohammad Marandi, who was part of the delegation, informed the Lebanon-based Al Mayadeen newspaper that they had received warnings of a potential attack on their aircraft en route to Islamabad. These alerts prompted heightened caution throughout their stay and on their return journey.

Return Route Altered Amidst Security Warnings

Professor Marandi stated that the return journey was significantly altered after the delegation confirmed they were under threat of attack. The aircraft was diverted from its planned route and landed in Mashhad, Iran. From there, the delegation continued their journey to Tehran by train, car, and bus.

He elaborated that the decision to change the route was a direct response to credible intelligence indicating a potential threat to their plane. “We received direct threats and credible intelligence indicating that the Iranian delegation’s plane to Islamabad could be attacked,” Marandi told Al Mayadeen. He further confirmed that the return journey was modified following this alert, with the plane changing its route, landing in Mashhad, and the delegation subsequently being transferred to Tehran via ground transportation.

Tensions Underscore Diplomatic Fragility

Professor Marandi also pointed to the timing of these developments, linking them to broader diplomatic tensions. The negotiations with the United States delegation, reportedly led by Vice President J D Vance, had ended abruptly. Marandi noted that this collapse coincided with the publication of an opinion piece in The Washington Post, suggesting a connection to the CIA.

Despite the heightened security risks and the collapse of negotiations, the entire delegation reportedly decided to depart from Islamabad together, with no members opting to stay behind. The incident underscores the complex and often perilous environment in which high-level diplomatic engagements are conducted amidst prevailing regional instabilities.
