Pune Railway Station Offers Budget-Friendly Sleeping Pods for Travellers

Pune, Maharashtra – Passengers at Pune railway station now have access to affordable and modern resting facilities with the introduction of 26 sleeping pods and an air-conditioned executive lounge. This initiative aims to provide a comfortable and budget-friendly short-term accommodation option for travellers, particularly those facing long layovers or train delays.

Executive Lounge and Sleeping Pods Installed

The AC Executive Lounge, located on the first floor of the reservation building, houses the new sleeping pods. This integrated passenger facility has been developed under the non-fare revenue (NFR) model, where the Railways leases space to private operators. The facility was opened to the public on March 23rd. In addition to the sleeping pods, the lounge features 17 three-seater sofa sets.

Pricing and Amenities

The entry fee for the executive lounge is Rs 40 per hour. The sleeping pods are available at graded tariffs: Rs 300 for 3 hours, Rs 400 for 6 hours, Rs 500 for 9 hours, Rs 600 for 12 hours, and Rs 1,200 for 24 hours. These rates are inclusive of all taxes. Passengers have welcomed the facility for its convenience and affordability, with some specifically noting the availability of a baby feeding room as a thoughtful addition.

The lounge offers a comprehensive range of amenities, including air-conditioned seating, television, washrooms, Wi-Fi, mobile charging points, reading lights, lockers, CCTV surveillance, and a baby feeding room. Railway officials stated that the pods are designed to offer passengers a compact, secure, and comfortable resting space at economical rates, allowing travellers to pay only for the duration of their use.

Operational Details and Contract

The facility is operated by contractor K. Padmaja, who pays an annual license fee of Rs 36,00,002 to the Railways. While the introduction of these modern facilities has been lauded by passengers, there is currently no provision for online booking, requiring passengers to book in person.

Pune railway station previously offered dormitory and retiring room services managed by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). However, this new sleeping pod facility provides a more contemporary and flexible option for short-term rest.
