Jammu and Kashmir: Progress on Sungal Tunnel on Jammu-Poonch Highway Reviewed

JAMMU, April 20: The ongoing construction of the 2.79-kilometer-long Sungal tunnel, a crucial infrastructure project on the strategic Jammu-Poonch Highway, was reviewed by senior officials on Monday. The tunnel, situated on the route connecting Akhnoor and Poonch, is nearing its scheduled completion later this year.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that officials briefed on-site about the current status of the Sungal tunnel project. The review encompassed various aspects of the construction, including excavation work, structural integrity, and the associated road development necessary for its integration into the existing highway network. The Sungal tunnel represents the second of four planned tunnels along the national highway, often referred to as the “golden arc road,” to reach a significant construction phase.

The “golden arc road” itself is an approximately 200-kilometer-long strategic artery designed to enhance connectivity between south Kashmir and the western districts of Jammu and Kashmir. It serves to link vital border areas, notably Akhnoor, Rajouri, and Poonch, bolstering logistical and travel capabilities in the region. The development of these tunnels is considered paramount for ensuring reliable all-weather access across these critical terrains.

Beyond the Sungal tunnel, the highway project incorporates three other major tunnels: Kandi, Naushera, and Bhimber Gali. The 700-meter-long Naushera tunnel has already been completed. Work is presently underway on the 260-meter-long Kandi tunnel and the 1.1-kilometer-long Bhimber Gali tunnel, indicating a sustained effort to modernize and improve the region’s transportation infrastructure.

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is the executing agency responsible for the Sungal tunnel project. The successful completion of the Sungal tunnel is expected to significantly improve travel times and accessibility between Akhnoor and Poonch, contributing to economic development and security in the region. The project aligns with broader national objectives of enhancing connectivity in border areas and ensuring robust infrastructure capable of supporting sustained movement regardless of climatic conditions.
