SRINAGAR: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Jammu and Kashmir has filed a charge-sheet against a former Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) of the Public Works Department (PWD), Roads and Buildings division, Sopore, in a bribery case. The charge-sheet was presented before the Special Judge Anti-Corruption Court in Baramulla.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the case pertains to allegations of illegal gratification demanded by the accused officer for processing a contractor’s bill. The complaint, lodged by a contractor, stated that the AEE demanded a 2 percent commission for clearing a bill amounting to Rs 28.27 lakh. This bill was related to the construction of a classroom lecture block at the Government Degree College Sopore.
Following an initial verification of the complaint, the ACB registered a case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. A planned operation was then conducted by the ACB to apprehend the accused. On October 16, 2024, the officer was reportedly apprehended red-handed while accepting Rs 25,000 in bribe money. The amount was recovered on the spot in the presence of independent witnesses.
The investigation further revealed that the officer had allegedly used his official position to withhold the clearance of the contractor’s bill, aiming to extract the illegal payment. The ACB’s investigation concluded with the collection of evidence and obtaining the necessary prosecution sanction from the competent authority.
Subsequently, the ACB submitted its final charge-sheet before the designated court. The judicial proceedings are now underway, with the next hearing in the case scheduled for June 6, 2026. The ACB continues its efforts to combat corruption within government departments across the Union Territory.
