Srinagar district administration organised its first inter-college debate competition on Saturday at Amar Singh College, aiming to foster intellectual discourse and empower youth through academic engagement.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the event, held as part of a broader youth engagement and empowerment programme, saw enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members across various city colleges.
The competition, which was presided over by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Srinagar, Akshay Labroo, focused on the theme ‘Skill development and not the delivery of formal degrees should be the priority of the government today.’ This theme sparked insightful discussions, with students presenting well-reasoned arguments both for and against the motion.
In his address, Deputy Commissioner Labroo highlighted the event as a key component of a comprehensive 12-month youth empowerment plan. He emphasised the administration’s commitment to nurturing academic excellence, critical thinking, and active youth participation, stating that such structured interventions are crucial for preparing young individuals to face emerging challenges.
Labroo underscored that the Rolling Trophy Debate Competition is integral to the district’s Youth Development and Empowerment Plan, reflecting a dedication to promoting intellectual exchange among students. He further elaborated that these initiatives play a vital role in safeguarding youth from social evils, such as drug abuse, and channel their energies towards positive and constructive societal contributions.
The Principal of Amar Singh College, Ajaz Ahmad Hakak, in his welcome address, stressed the significance of academic platforms like debate competitions in honing analytical thinking and public speaking skills among students. He also highlighted the importance of aligning educational frameworks with contemporary societal needs, particularly concerning employability and skill enhancement.
Chief Planning Officer Srinagar, Fayaz Ahmad Dar, and Nodal Principal, Kashmir Division Colleges, Seema Naaz, were among the dignitaries present at the event, underscoring the institutional support for such developmental activities.
The competition concluded with the Deputy Commissioner felicitating the winners, acknowledging their outstanding performance and contribution to the intellectual discourse. The event aimed to provide a platform for students to develop their viewpoints and articulate them effectively, aligning with the administration’s broader goals for youth development in Srinagar.
