Ladakh Focuses on Sustainable Development: Water Security and Plantation Key

Leh, Ladakh: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has emphasized the critical need for a concentrated strategy towards sustainable development in Ladakh, identifying water security and extensive plantation drives as fundamental elements for the region’s comprehensive progress. This directive came as Ladakh’s Lieutenant Governor, V.K. Saxena, provided an update on the Union Territory’s environmental initiatives.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, Lieutenant Governor Saxena briefed the Home Minister on the ongoing efforts, including the establishment of 50 water bodies across various villages under ‘Project Him Sarovar’ and a recent, significant plantation initiative. During a visit to Leh on the auspicious occasion of Buddh Purnima, Union Home Minister Shah, while acknowledging the spiritual significance of his visit, urged for a focused approach on sustainable development. He specifically highlighted large-scale plantation and ensuring water security as the core pillars for the holistic development of Ladakh.

Senior political figure from Ladakh, Thupstan Chewang, advocated for the imperative of harnessing water from the Shyok river to meet the region’s demands for drinking water and agricultural irrigation. Concurrently, environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk pointed out that a mere one percent of Ladakh’s glacial melt is currently being utilized, with the remainder flowing away without purpose. He stressed the urgent requirement for innovative methodologies to conserve this vital resource, as conveyed by the Lieutenant Governor.

Official sources indicate that the Union Territory administration has already initiated a widespread campaign to achieve the dual objectives of increasing green cover and conserving water resources, thereby fostering climate-resilient development throughout Ladakh. The Lieutenant Governor shared encouraging progress, stating that in the preceding 40 days alone, over 4,500 trees of indigenous species have been planted across Leh and Kargil districts, reinforcing the commitment to environmental sustainability.

Furthermore, approximately 500 saplings of various species, including bamboo, amaltas, gulmohar, jacaranda, bougainvillea, banyan, peepal, and imli, have been planted in Leh on an experimental basis to assess their viability and contribution to the local ecosystem. In line with the Home Minister’s directives, the pace of plantation exercises and water conservation efforts is set to be further accelerated across the entire region. Authorities have set an ambitious target of creating at least 100 large water bodies within the next year.

The long-term vision for Ladakh’s environmental landscape includes a significant increase in forest cover, with plans to elevate it from its current level of less than one percent to a minimum of five percent over the next two years. These initiatives are designed to bolster the region’s ecological resilience and ensure sustainable growth for its inhabitants and its unique natural environment.
