Tamil Nadu Witnesses Political Reshuffle as TVK Emerges as Largest Party in Hung Assembly

Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s political landscape has undergone a significant transformation with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a newcomer party, emerging as the single largest party in the state’s assembly elections. Despite securing 108 seats, the TVK fell short of the 118-seat majority mark, resulting in a hung assembly for the first time in decades. The election results, announced on May 5, 2026, have reshaped the state’s political dynamics, signalling a departure from the long-standing dominance of the Dravidian majors, the DMK and AIADMK.

TVK Secures Plurality Amidst Hung Assembly

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay, has made a historic impact by winning 108 seats in the 234-member assembly. This performance, however, leaves the party 10 seats shy of an outright majority. The electoral outcome has paved the way for post-poll alliances to form a stable government. Reports indicate that the TVK has been in discussions with ideologically aligned parties to garner the necessary support. The party’s strong performance, particularly in its debut election, has been described as a ‘historic shift’ by political analysts.

Dravidian Majors Face Setback

The long-dominant Dravidian parties, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), have experienced a significant setback in the 2026 Assembly elections. The incumbent DMK, led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, secured 59 seats, and the AIADMK garnered 46 seats. Notably, M.K. Stalin lost his traditional stronghold of Kolathur to the TVK’s candidate, V.S. Babu. This marks a substantial decline for both parties, which have historically alternated in power in the state for over five decades.

Post-Poll Alliances and Government Formation

With a hung assembly, the focus now shifts to the formation of a stable government. The TVK, as the largest single party, is expected to lead the government formation process. Reports suggest that the TVK is seeking support from parties such as the Congress, CPI(M), CPI, and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which have previously aligned with the DMK-led coalition. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) also holds a few seats, potentially playing a kingmaker role. The AIADMK, despite losing its position as the principal opposition to the DMK, may also explore avenues for alliances.

Electoral Trends and Voter Turnout

The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections witnessed a record voter turnout, exceeding 85% in many constituencies, a significant increase from previous elections. This high turnout is being analysed in conjunction with changes in the electoral rolls. While the absolute number of voters remained relatively consistent, a reduction in the total number of registered voters reportedly inflated the percentage turnout. The election also saw a notable shift in regional voting patterns, with the Greater Chennai region and northern Tamil Nadu playing a crucial role in shaping the outcome. The debut of actor Vijay’s TVK is seen as a significant disruptor, potentially influencing vote shares across traditional party lines.

Background of the Political Shift

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections had already indicated a potential shift in Tamil Nadu’s political narrative, with the INDIA bloc, led by the DMK, securing a dominant position in most Assembly segments. The emergence of actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) shortly before the 2024 general elections, though not contesting then, signalled its intent to challenge the established political order. The party’s focus on contesting the 2026 Assembly elections marked its full entry into state politics. The political landscape of Tamil Nadu has historically been defined by the Dravidian movement, with the DMK and AIADMK being the dominant forces. However, the 2026 election results suggest a potential fragmentation of this traditional binary, with the TVK now at the forefront.
