Pune Sizzles as Shivajinagar Records Highest May Minimum Temperature in Four Decades

Pune, Maharashtra: The city of Pune experienced an unusually warm morning on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, with the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) weather station at Shivajinagar recording a minimum temperature of 27.4 degrees Celsius. This marks the fourth-highest minimum temperature recorded in May since 1969, signaling a significant deviation from typical weather patterns for this time of year. The recorded minimum temperature was 5.1 degrees Celsius above the normal average for the period.

Rising Temperatures Across the City

The minimum temperature in Shivajinagar has seen a notable increase, climbing by 5.7 degrees Celsius in just three days, from 21.7 degrees Celsius on May 10. This surge has contributed to widespread discomfort across the city. Other areas of Pune also experienced exceptionally high morning temperatures. Lohegaon recorded a minimum of 29.2 degrees Celsius, which is a concerning 6.9 degrees Celsius above its normal average and substantially higher than the previous morning’s 27 degrees Celsius. Areas like Hadapsar, Magarpatta, and Koregaon Park started the day with temperatures reaching 28.8 degrees Celsius, further indicating the pervasive warmth affecting the region.

Historical Temperature Data

According to records, the last time Shivajinagar experienced such warm May mornings was in 2024, when the temperature reached 27.3 degrees Celsius. In comparison, the warmest May morning recorded last year was 25.3 degrees Celsius. Historical data from Shivajinagar reveals that the highest minimum temperature for May was 29.4 degrees Celsius on May 12, 1979. The second-highest on record was 28.2 degrees Celsius recorded a day earlier that same year. More recently, on May 19, 2010, the morning warmth in Shivajinagar reached 28 degrees Celsius.

Broader Weather Context

The intense heatwave conditions are consistent with forecasts of dry and hot weather expected to continue through the week, with temperatures potentially nearing 42 degrees Celsius. This persistent heat is attributed to dry and hot winds sweeping across Madhya Maharashtra, influenced by northerly winds from Rajasthan and Gujarat moving towards the leeward side of the Western Ghats. Neighboring districts, including Ahilyanagar, Nashik, Sangli, and Solapur, have also recorded temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, with Jalgaon being the hottest in the region at 44.5 degrees Celsius. Pune has not received any rainfall in May so far, against a normal average of 19.8 mm for the month, exacerbating the heatwave conditions.
