The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has announced that elections for the chairpersons and deputy chairpersons of its 12 ward committees, as well as for six vacancies in the Standing Committee, will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the civic body issued a notification detailing the electoral process. These elections are mandated under the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, with amendments in 2022. The law stipulates that each ward committee must elect a chairperson and a deputy chairperson from among its councillors during its first meeting of the year.
The municipal elections are scheduled to take place across two designated halls within the Civic Centre. The Hansraj Gupta Auditorium, located on the first floor, will host the meetings for six ward committees: South, Keshavpuram, Rohini, Narela, Central, and West. These sessions are planned to be staggered between 10 am and 4 pm.
Concurrently, the Satya Narayan Bansal Auditorium on the second floor will serve as the venue for the remaining six ward committees. These include Najafgarh, Shahdara South, Shahdara North, Karol Bagh, Civil Lines, and City Sadar-Paharganj. Their meetings will follow the same schedule, from 10 am to 4 pm on May 23.
In addition to the ward committee leadership elections, the MCD will also conduct elections to fill six vacant positions on the influential Standing Committee. These vacancies have arisen due to the conclusion of the tenures of the current members who represented specific ward committees, as per Section 45(3) of the Act. The retiring members identified in the notification are Shikha Bhardwaj (Ward 58), Anju Devi (Ward 29), Inderjeet Sahrawat (Ward 133), Rajpal Singh (Ward 174), Neema Bhagat (Ward 210), and Ankush Narang (Ward 87).
The election for their replacements will be carried out by the respective ward committees from which the retiring members were drawn. Specifically, the ward committees of Keshavpuram, Narela, Central, Najafgarh, Shahdara South, and Karol Bagh will elect new members to the Standing Committee on the same day, May 23.
All stipulated elections, both for ward committee leadership and the Standing Committee vacancies, will be conducted using the secret ballot method to ensure fairness and confidentiality. Prospective candidates are required to submit their nomination papers, which must be duly signed by the candidate and endorsed by two other councillors. These nominations must be submitted to the Municipal Secretary a minimum of three days prior to the scheduled election date.
The deadline for the submission of nomination papers has been set for Tuesday, May 19, 2026. Candidates will retain the option to withdraw their nominations at any point before the commencement of the election process during their respective committee meetings. The notification issued by the Commissioner Secretary’s Office of the MCD outlines these procedures in detail, referencing Section 47 read with Section 51 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, for the ward committee elections, and Section 45(3) for the Standing Committee vacancies.
