Three individuals have lost their lives in a fatal road accident on the East Coast Road (ECR) in Tamil Nadu on Sunday. The accident occurred near Periyamudaliyar Chavadi, where the victims were riding triples on a motorcycle.
The deceased have been identified as Silambarasan, aged 29, from Alapakkam, and his relatives Stalin, 37, and Karthikeyan, 33, both from Kalapet. The circumstances leading to the collision are currently under investigation by the local police.
The East Coast Road, a prominent arterial route in Tamil Nadu, has unfortunately been the site of numerous accidents, with fatalities frequently reported. This incident underscores the ongoing concerns regarding road safety along this stretch.
Previous incidents on the ECR include a fatal collision in December 2009 where three people died and three others were injured when a car they were travelling in collided with a truck. More recently, in October 2023, a family of three was killed when their two-wheeler was hit by a speeding SUV near Kovalam. In December 2025, two separate accidents on the ECR resulted in two fatalities and fifteen injuries, involving a van and a state transport bus, and a private bus that overturned due to poor visibility. Another accident in December 2025 saw five deaths when a speeding car rammed a stationary vehicle near Keelakarai. In October 2025, two tech professionals died when their motorcycle collided with a mini-bus near Marakanam. In March 2026, two college students lost their lives in an accident near Thirukazhukundram. In August 2018, a tragic incident saw three people die and four others injured when a car driven by a minor ploughed into people assisting at an earlier accident site near Mamallapuram. In July 2011, three software professionals were killed when their car collided with a lorry near Nemeli.
These recurring incidents highlight persistent issues with road safety, including speeding, loss of control due to weather conditions, and collisions involving multiple vehicles. Authorities have in the past registered cases under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, such as rash driving, and investigations into the causes of these accidents are typically ongoing.
