NEW DELHI, May 22: A significant heatwave is expected to persist across vast swathes of India, including the plains of the northwest, central, and eastern regions, as well as parts of the Peninsular India, for the next six to seven days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning on Friday indicating that severe heatwave conditions are particularly likely in several key areas.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that heatwave conditions are anticipated in isolated pockets of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh from May 22 to May 28. The IMD has specified that severe heatwave conditions are projected for East Uttar Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh during the same period. This forecast suggests a continuation of uncomfortably high temperatures across these populous states.
In the northwestern parts of the country, heatwave conditions are very likely in isolated to some areas of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi from May 22 to May 28. More concerningly, severe heatwave conditions are predicted to affect some areas within these regions between May 24 and May 27, signalling a potential peak in the intensity of the heat.
The IMD further stated that Rajasthan is also likely to experience heatwave conditions in isolated to some pockets between May 22 and May 28. The western parts of the state, in particular, are forecast to face severe heatwave conditions in isolated to some pockets during May 24 to May 28, highlighting the widespread nature of the current heat stress.
Beyond these core regions, the forecast extends to other parts of the country. Vidarbha, Coastal Andhra, Yanam, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Telangana, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand are all expected to witness either heatwave or severe heatwave conditions on various dates between May 22 and May 28. This broad geographical spread indicates a widespread weather phenomenon affecting a significant portion of the Indian subcontinent.
Adding to the discomfort, warm night conditions are also anticipated in isolated pockets. Uttar Pradesh and Vidarbha are expected to experience warm nights from May 22 to May 24. Odisha is likely to see similar conditions from May 22 to May 26, while Telangana may experience them on May 22 and May 23. Warm nights, where temperatures remain high overnight, can exacerbate the effects of daytime heat and increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
The IMD’s advisory serves as a crucial alert for authorities and the public to take necessary precautions. Measures such as staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours, and seeking cooler environments are recommended to mitigate the health risks associated with extreme heat.
The prolonged period of high temperatures underscores the importance of climate monitoring and public health preparedness. The meteorological department’s regular updates are vital for informing response strategies across the affected states and ensuring the safety of vulnerable populations during this critical weather event.
The forecast implies a continued challenge for agriculture, water resources, and public health infrastructure as the country navigates this intense summer period. Authorities are expected to monitor the situation closely and issue further advisories as needed.
