The district, like much of Andhra Pradesh, has been under the grip of a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring to dangerous levels. The relentless sun and oppressive heat have forced many to curtail their outdoor activities, leading to a deserted appearance on the streets, particularly during the afternoon. This situation has been exacerbated by high temperatures that have been consistently recorded across the state, with multiple districts experiencing readings well above 42 degrees Celsius, and some even exceeding 47 degrees Celsius.
The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has been issuing regular warnings and advisories to the public. In Vizianagaram, the Collector’s directive to stay indoors is a measure aimed at preventing heat-related illnesses and fatalities. Such advisories are crucial in safeguarding vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes and heart ailments.

The heatwave is not an isolated phenomenon in Vizianagaram; it is part of a larger crisis affecting Andhra Pradesh and other parts of India. Recent reports indicate that heatwave conditions have led to deaths in neighboring states, underscoring the gravity of the situation. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts, predicting that severe heatwave conditions would persist in several districts of Andhra Pradesh for several days. Specific advisories have been issued for districts including East Godavari, Konaseema, Eluru, West Godavari, NTR, Krishna, Palnadu, Guntur, Bapatla, Prakasam, and Nellore, with temperatures expected to remain high.
Authorities are urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and to be aware of the symptoms of heatstroke. Public health departments have been advised to remain on high alert, ensuring adequate medical preparedness and the stocking of essential supplies like Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) packets. Reports from May 20 indicated that while no deaths had been officially reported in Andhra Pradesh due to heatstroke, a significant number of suspected cases were recorded across the state between March and mid-May, with Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, and Vizianagaram districts reporting a notable number of cases.
