Delhi Cop’s Bravery Saves 13, Including Visually Impaired Students, from Burari Blaze

A Delhi Police head constable displayed exceptional courage by risking his life to rescue 13 individuals, including 11 visually impaired students, from a multi-storey building engulfed in flames in north Delhi’s Burari area. The daring rescue operation took place in the early hours of May 17 amidst thick smoke and intense heat.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the fire broke out around 2:30 am on the intervening night of May 16 and 17 in Daroga Market, Burari, with flames rapidly engulfing several shops on the ground floor of a building. The fire quickly spread to the upper floors, creating a perilous situation for the occupants.

Head Constable Amar Singh, attached to the Burari police station and on night patrol duty, was alerted by a local resident about the incident. Upon arriving at the scene, he observed that the fire had already consumed eight shops and was rapidly ascending, critically obstructing the building’s staircase and trapping residents on the upper floors.

Witnessing a man and a woman stranded on the second floor, with escape routes completely cut off by dense smoke and fierce flames, Constable Singh took immediate action. According to senior police officials, he did not wait for the fire brigade or additional police personnel to arrive.

In a remarkable display of initiative, Constable Singh commandeered a passing truck. He climbed onto its roof, using it as a platform to reach a balcony on the second floor. Despite the near-zero visibility and overwhelming smoke, he bravely carried both individuals, one after the other, on his shoulders to safety. The intense smoke inhalation during the rescue caused him to collapse briefly.

Further complicating the emergency, Constable Singh learned that visually impaired students were trapped in an adjacent building, which was in imminent danger of catching fire. Without hesitation, he entered the second building.

He successfully guided all 11 students out through the staircase before the fire could spread to their quarters. Officials confirmed that the entire rescue operation, encompassing both rescues, was executed single-handedly by Head Constable Amar Singh prior to the arrival of emergency services.

The incident highlights the bravery and quick thinking of the police personnel in a critical situation. The visually impaired students were accommodated in a facility that was not directly affected by the fire, and their safety was ensured. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the authorities.
