Harbans Kaur, the mother-in-law of Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, has emerged victorious in the Municipal Corporation (MC) elections in Bathinda, securing victory as an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate from Ward 5. She won the seat by a margin of 264 votes, marking a political success for the ruling party in the local body elections.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the 70-year-old Harbans Kaur, a homemaker residing in Hazura Kapura Colony on Barnala Road, has long-standing ties to the region’s political landscape. Her husband, Bhola Singh Maluka, is a former president of the Thermal Plant Technical Employees’ Union and reportedly held the position for approximately 25 years. Their son serves as a Sub-Inspector in the local police force.
Harbans Kaur’s elder daughter, Gurpreet Kaur, is married to Kultar Sandhwan, the current Speaker of the Punjab Legislative Assembly. While Sandhwan himself did not actively campaign for his mother-in-law during the election period, her victory signifies a significant win for the AAP in the Bathinda Municipal Corporation.
The family’s political affiliations have seen a notable shift. Previously, they were associated with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and had extended support to former cabinet minister Sikander Singh Maluka. However, following Kultar Sandhwan’s decision to join the Aam Aadmi Party, the family also transitioned their political allegiance to the AAP.
In the electoral contest for Ward 5, Harbans Kaur faced a challenge from an Independent candidate, Baljit Kaur, the wife of a former AAP rebel, Rajinder Singh. The election results underscore the AAP’s strength in Bathinda, with Harbans Kaur’s win reinforcing the party’s presence in the municipal governance of the city.
