Uttar Pradesh: Six Dead as Under-Construction Bridge Collapses During Storm

At least six construction workers were killed and two feared trapped when a section of an under-construction bridge collapsed in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday evening amid a severe storm. The incident occurred in the Mahrajganj district of the state.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the bridge, part of a crucial infrastructure project, gave way around 5 p.m. Local residents reported that construction activities were in full swing when the storm, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rainfall, struck the area. Subsequently, a significant portion of the bridge structure, including supporting pillars, crumbled, leading to the collapse and burying workers under the debris.

Emergency services, including the police and disaster response teams, were immediately dispatched to the scene. Rescue operations commenced promptly, with authorities working to extricate any individuals still trapped beneath the rubble. Efforts were focused on clearing the debris and providing immediate medical attention to the injured.

The exact cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, but preliminary reports suggest that the storm’s intensity may have compromised the structural integrity of the bridge. Investigators are expected to examine the construction materials, engineering plans, and adherence to safety protocols to ascertain the precise reasons behind the disaster. The collapse raises serious questions about the quality of construction and the safety measures implemented during the project.

The deceased workers were primarily engaged in the erection and reinforcement of the bridge structure. Their bodies were recovered from the debris and have been sent for post-mortem examinations. The condition of the two individuals still believed to be trapped is critical, and rescue teams are intensifying their efforts to locate them.

The bridge, once completed, was intended to improve connectivity in the region and ease traffic congestion. Its collapse not only results in a tragic loss of life but also signifies a considerable setback for the development project. The district administration has announced ex-gratia compensation for the families of the deceased and is coordinating efforts to provide all necessary support to the affected families, including those whose relatives are injured or missing.

This incident highlights the potential vulnerabilities of large-scale construction projects, especially in regions prone to extreme weather conditions. A thorough investigation is anticipated to shed light on the contributing factors and to ensure that such catastrophic failures are prevented in the future through stringent oversight and adherence to best practices in civil engineering and construction management. The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a detailed inquiry into the matter.
