New Delhi: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Delhi Police has successfully apprehended a proclaimed offender from Madhya Pradesh in connection with a significant bank fraud case. The fraud, amounting to ₹6.25 crore, involved the use of forged cheques and the fraudulent withdrawal of funds from an account belonging to Amity University.
Accused Arrested in Madhya Pradesh
The arrested individual, identified as Sudama Narware, a 58-year-old resident of Betul district in Madhya Pradesh, was taken into custody following an FIR registered in 2020. The FIR was lodged by the EOW under charges of cheating, forgery, use of forged documents, and criminal conspiracy.
The case originated from a complaint filed by an Assistant General Manager of Allahabad Bank’s Sansad Marg branch. The complaint detailed fraudulent transactions detected in the account of Amity University, totaling ₹6.25 crore.
Modus Operandi of the Fraud
According to investigators, three cheques, purportedly issued by Amity University, were presented for clearance in August 2019. Two of these cheques were cleared through ICICI Bank, resulting in the transfer of ₹5.20 crore to accounts located in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
The third cheque, presented through IndusInd Bank, had its payment stopped before it could be processed. During the course of the investigation, bank records and account statements related to these transactions were meticulously examined by the police.
Tracing the Funds
The investigation revealed that one forged cheque, valued at ₹2.5 crore, was deposited into the account of NS Infrastructure in Vadodara. Another cheque, for ₹2.7 crore, was credited to the account of an NGO named Maa Tapti Manav Seva Sansthan in Betul.
Police identified Narware as the secretary and authorized signatory of the NGO. It is alleged that after the funds were credited to the NGO’s account, Narware proceeded to transfer ₹2.07 crore to another individual involved in the scheme. Subsequently, these funds were routed through multiple accounts, including those of five alleged shell firms based in Delhi.
The arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts by the Delhi Police to curb financial crimes and bring perpetrators of large-scale fraud to justice.
