In a notable electoral achievement, Samriti Atri, a 22-year-old pharmacist, has secured a victory in the Block Development Committee (BDC) elections from Dharampur block in Himachal Pradesh. Her win positions her as one of the youngest individuals to achieve success in the recent rural local body polls.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Atri, representing Kasauli-Garkhal Ward No. 5, brings a unique background to her new role. Professionally a pharmacist, she has been actively engaged in community service through a non-governmental organisation that operates a mobile medical unit in the Dharampur area. Her victory is being interpreted as a reflection of sincerity, grassroots engagement, and the trust placed in her by the public.
Atri’s foray into electoral politics was not a long-held ambition. The journey began serendipitously when she posted on social media, soliciting public opinion on their preferred candidate for the upcoming BDC elections. The substantial encouragement she received subsequently motivated her to file her nomination. Throughout her campaign, as she connected with voters, support for the young candidate reportedly grew, culminating in her maiden electoral triumph.
In an interaction, Samriti Atri stated that rural development would be her principal area of focus. She conveyed her commitment to enhancing basic amenities within the constituency. Furthermore, she expressed an intention to leverage her professional expertise in healthcare to provide more effective service to the community.
As the eldest of four siblings, Atri acknowledged the responsibilities that accompany her newly elected position. She indicated a determination to work diligently for the welfare of her electoral area. Atri hails from Ghusan village, situated along the Garkhal-Kasauli road. Her father, Shiv Narayan, is employed as a laboratory technician at the Central Research Institute in Kasauli, while her mother, Promila, is a homemaker.
Her foundational education was completed at Saraswati Niketan School in Nalwa, near Kasauli. Subsequently, she obtained a Diploma in Pharmacy from the Government College of Pharmacy in Rohru. She further pursued her academic endeavours, completing her Bachelor of Pharmacy from LR Institute, located near Solan, in the preceding year. Having already dedicated a year to community healthcare outreach, Atri now aims to extend this service through her public office and contribute meaningfully to the region’s developmental initiatives.
