A speeding SUV collided with a motorcycle and then crashed into a roadside shop before overturning in Varanasi late Friday, resulting in injuries to three individuals. The incident occurred in the Aurangabad area under the Sigra police station limits.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, the black SUV was traveling at a high speed when it first struck a motorcycle. Following this initial impact, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which then hit pedestrians on the roadside before crashing into a milk and cream shop. The impact caused damage to the shop, and the SUV subsequently overturned.
The driver of the SUV has been identified as Prince Sahani, aged 18 years and six months. His brother, Sahil Sahani, was also present in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Police clarified that despite initial confusion, the driver is legally an adult.
The injured individuals have been identified as Ranganath Pandey, 30, from Mirzapur; Vishwambhar Nath Chaurasia, 72, from the Jaddumandi area of Luxa; and Meeta Sonkar, 55, from Aurangabad. Local residents quickly gathered at the scene to assist the injured.
A team from the Sigra police station arrived at the location, seized the damaged SUV, and transported the injured to nearby hospitals. Their conditions are reported to be stable.
Police have registered a case against the driver under sections 281, 125B, and 324(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigators are examining whether overspeeding, reckless driving, or loss of control due to the initial impact contributed to the series of collisions. CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.
This incident adds to a series of road accidents reported in Varanasi in recent times, highlighting concerns about traffic safety in the city. In a separate incident in April 2026, a road accident in the Phulpur police station area led to a fatal mob assault on the driver after a woman was injured. Earlier, in March 2023, a speeding car ran over three people, including a woman and two minors, in the Sarnath area, with the car also overturning. In another incident in May 2025, four men on a single motorcycle died when their vehicle collided with a speeding SUV on the Gorakhpur-Varanasi National Highway.
The local administration has been urged by citizens to implement stricter traffic management measures and enforce speed limits more rigorously to prevent such accidents. The review of CCTV footage and further investigation by the Sigra police are expected to provide a clearer picture of the events leading up to the crash.
The injured are receiving medical attention, and authorities are ensuring they get the best possible care. The investigation into the accident is ongoing, with a focus on determining the exact cause of the driver losing control of the vehicle.
The incident underscores the persistent challenges of road safety in urban areas, where high speeds and sudden loss of vehicle control can have severe consequences. The police are committed to ensuring accountability and promoting safer road practices within the district.
