Seven police personnel sustained injuries after a mob resorted to stone-pelting during a late-night demolition drive in Pimpri-Chinchwad on Monday. The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) razed 11 unauthorized religious structures in the Kudalwadi area as part of an ongoing anti-encroachment campaign.
Tense Situation During Demolition Drive
The demolition operation, which commenced after midnight, was conducted under heavy police presence to preempt any law and order disturbances. However, the civic action led to a tense atmosphere as local residents protested against the razing of the structures. Reports indicate that the situation escalated with instances of stone-pelting directed at the officials and police personnel. At least two officers required stitches for their injuries, while others sustained minor wounds. Authorities managed to control the situation with the use of mild force.
PCMC’s Ongoing Campaign Against Illegal Constructions
According to civic officials, the demolished structures were identified as unauthorized and were targeted as part of a broader initiative by PCMC to address illegal constructions across the city. This incident marks the second such demolition drive in Kudalwadi within a month, following a similar action in May 2026 where four illegal religious structures were removed. The PCMC has stated its commitment to continuing enforcement against illegal developments to uphold planning regulations and promote orderly urban growth.
Background of Enforcement Actions in Kudalwadi
Kudalwadi has been a focal point for anti-encroachment drives in recent years. In February 2025, PCMC undertook a large-scale operation spanning approximately 850 acres, clearing numerous unauthorized structures including warehouses and scrap businesses. More recently, in May 2026, the civic body demolished 36 unauthorized residential units in Chikhali, finding them to be built within the blue flood line of the Indrayani River. The recent demolition of religious structures is part of this continuous effort by the corporation.
The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s actions are in line with broader efforts to enforce planning regulations and ensure urban development adheres to legal frameworks. The corporation has indicated that it will persist in its crackdown on illegal constructions across all categories.
