Srinagar, June 11: The Jammu and Kashmir Civil Society Forum (JKCSF) has sounded an alarm over the critical condition of the Ferozpora Nallah in Tangmarg, accusing authorities of inaction against rampant illegal mining and extensive water diversion that are jeopardizing the lifeline for local communities.
Information was available with The Chenab Times detailing the forum’s grave concerns regarding the diminishing water flow of the nallah, which serves as a primary source for irrigation and drinking water for thousands of residents and farmers in the region. The JKCSF Chairman, Abdul Qayoom Wani, characterized the situation as an environmental and humanitarian crisis, emphasizing the severe hardships faced by the populace due to the continuous decline in water levels.
Wani stated that the Ferozpora Nallah has historically been a crucial resource for the people of Tangmarg, supporting their agricultural activities and daily water needs. However, he lamented that the stream is now suffering from excessive water extraction through pipelines and uncontrolled illegal mining, which collectively impede its natural course and volume.
According to Wani, reports indicate that approximately 350 cubic feet of water per second are being diverted, significantly exacerbating the water shortage for both agricultural irrigation and domestic consumption. This depletion directly impacts farming, with crops withering due to insufficient water supply, and raises serious concerns among residents about the availability of potable water.
The JKCSF chairman further alleged that when members of the civil society attempted to voice opposition to these illegal activities, an First Information Report (FIR) was registered against them. Despite this, Wani affirmed that such punitive measures would not deter the forum from advocating for the rights and welfare of the local communities, asserting that their voices would not be silenced by intimidation or pressure.
Describing the Ferozpora Nallah as the “lifeline of Tangmarg,” Wani underscored the direct threat its depletion poses to agriculture, livelihoods, and the overall ecological balance of the area. He called for urgent and decisive action against all ongoing illegal mining operations, a comprehensive review of existing water diversion practices, and the construction of a dam in Tangmarg to secure the region’s long-term water future.
Wani urged authorities to intervene promptly to prevent the situation from escalating further, warning that the demise of the Ferozpora Nallah would inevitably lead to the ruin of the livelihoods and future prospects of thousands of farmers and residents.
