The fifth edition of the Andhra Premier League (APL) has commenced with a dynamic start, featuring high-scoring games and closely contested finishes. This year’s tournament, which began on June 9, 2026, is being held across three cities in Andhra Pradesh: Visakhapatnam, Kadapa, and Mangalagiri, marking a significant expansion from previous seasons.
Multi-City Format to Boost Cricket’s Reach
The APL 2026 season is set to be a landmark event, with a departure from its traditional single-venue format. The decision to host matches in Visakhapatnam, Kadapa, and Mangalagiri aims to decentralize cricket development and expose players to diverse playing conditions. The Andhra Cricket Association (ACA) is overseeing the tournament, which is scheduled to run until June 30, 2026. This expansion is expected to increase the league’s reach and provide a greater platform for emerging talent from across the state.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the ACA has invested significantly in upgrading stadium infrastructure across these cities. The ACA Stadium in Mangalagiri has undergone renovations valued at ₹50 crore, while the stadium in Kadapa has been enhanced to potentially host international matches. These improvements are part of a broader strategy to bolster the cricketing ecosystem in Andhra Pradesh and promote the sport at the grassroots level.
Seven Teams Vie for Top Honors
Seven franchises are participating in the APL 2026: Amaravati Royals, Bhimavaram Bulls, Kakinada Kings, Royals of Rayalaseema, Simhadri Vizag Lions, Tungabhadra Warriors, and Vijayawada Sunshiners. The defending champions, Tungabhadra Warriors, who won their maiden title in the previous edition, will be looking to retain their crown. The league stage comprises 28 matches played in a single round-robin format, followed by an IPL-inspired playoff system. The top four teams will advance to the playoffs, which include Qualifier 1, the Eliminator, and Qualifier 2, culminating in the final match to be held in Mangalagiri.
Notable players gracing the tournament include former India Test players Hanuma Vihari and KS Bharat, alongside current national team all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, who are captaining their respective teams. This presence of established cricketers underscores the league’s growing stature and its role in nurturing talent.
Focus on Talent Development and Grassroots Engagement
The Andhra Premier League has consistently evolved since its inception in 2022, producing four different champions across its previous editions. The league’s primary objective, according to ACA president and MP Kesineni Shivanath, is to create more opportunities for young players and strengthen the state’s cricketing ecosystem. He emphasized that the league is designed to help local talent progress to national-level tournaments and potentially represent India in the future. The ACA is also encouraging youth participation by offering free passes to students from government schools and colleges.
The league’s commitment to developing cricket extends beyond the playing field. APL 2026 is also set to showcase Andhra Pradesh’s cultural heritage through traditional performances and entertainment programs featuring personalities from the film and music industries. This integration of culture and sport aims to provide a holistic experience for spectators and promote Andhra Pradesh as a vibrant sporting destination.
