Tamil Nadu CM to Distribute Government Jobs to Karur Stampede Victims’ Kin in First Visit as CM

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is set to visit Karur on Friday, July 9, 2026, to distribute government job appointment orders to the families of victims of the stampede that occurred during a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally on September 25, 2025. This marks his first visit to the district since assuming office as Chief Minister. He will personally hand over appointment orders on compassionate grounds to 32 family members of the victims, who will be inducted into various government departments based on their educational qualifications. The stampede tragically claimed 41 lives and resulted in injuries to several others during a campaign event addressed by Mr. Vijay.

The Chief Minister’s visit also includes laying the foundation stone for a new private non-leather footwear manufacturing factory in Manavasi, near Krishnarayapuram. This facility, with an investment of ₹1,700 crore, is projected to create approximately 13,500 employment opportunities and is seen as a significant industrial development for the region.

The visit comes amidst political discourse, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) welcoming the decision to provide government jobs but questioning the timing. State BJP president Nainar Nagendran stated that while the job distribution is a welcome move, a visit immediately after the tragedy would have held greater significance, suggesting the current timing is politically motivated. The Karur incident, one of the deadliest related to political gatherings in recent Tamil Nadu history, is also under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Extensive security measures have been put in place across Karur district for the Chief Minister’s engagements. Over 5,000 police personnel have been deployed, and attendance at the public events has been regulated with QR code-enabled passes to manage crowds effectively, drawing lessons from the previous stampede. Business owners in the vicinity have voiced concerns regarding restricted access to their establishments due to the security arrangements. The Chief Minister is scheduled to arrive in Karur by road after travelling from Chennai to Tiruchi by flight.
