The campaign, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to action, saw the successful planting of five crore saplings on June 5, coinciding with World Environment Day. This specific initiative, themed ‘Ek Pedh Maa Ke Naam’ (A Tree in Mother’s Name), encourages citizens to plant trees in honor of their mothers, fostering a personal connection to environmental stewardship.

Last year, the state had achieved a remarkable milestone by planting over 35 crore saplings. This extensive effort contributed to a cumulative total of 242 crore saplings planted across Uttar Pradesh over the past nine years. These figures represent a significant investment in the state’s ecological future and demonstrate a consistent, long-term approach to afforestation.

The Chief Minister highlighted the direct impact of these widespread plantation drives on mitigating climate change effects, improving air quality, and preserving biodiversity. The initiative is not merely about planting trees but about cultivating a culture of environmental responsibility among the populace, encouraging active participation in conservation efforts.

The extensive program involves various governmental departments, local bodies, educational institutions, and Non-Governmental Organizations, creating a broad-based movement for greening the state. Public awareness campaigns are also integral to the initiative, educating citizens about the benefits of trees and the importance of their care and maintenance.

Uttar Pradesh, being one of India’s most populous states, faces considerable environmental challenges. The large-scale sapling drives are seen as a crucial step towards creating a more sustainable environment for its residents. The focus extends beyond mere numbers, with efforts directed towards ensuring the survival and growth of the planted saplings through adequate care and monitoring mechanisms.

The ‘Ek Pedh Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, in particular, aims to imbue a sense of personal responsibility and emotional connection to nature. By linking the act of planting a tree to honoring mothers, the initiative seeks to create a deeper, more lasting commitment to environmental protection among families and communities across the state.

The cumulative achievement of over 242 crore saplings planted over nine years signifies a tangible contribution to national afforestation goals. These efforts are expected to yield long-term ecological benefits, including enhanced carbon sequestration, improved soil health, and increased water retention capacity, thereby contributing to a healthier environment for future generations in Uttar Pradesh.
