The Hutatma Express, a vital inter-city train service connecting the key Maharashtrian cities of Solapur and Pune, has completed 25 years of uninterrupted operation. The milestone, observed on July 14, 2026, marks the silver jubilee of a train that has become indispensable for daily commuters, students, business travelers, and tourists traversing the Solapur Division of Central Railway.
Introduced on July 15, 2001, the Hutatma Express has established itself as a symbol of reliable connectivity and passenger convenience. It plays a significant role in fostering economic, educational, and cultural ties between Solapur and Pune. The train operates as 12158 from Solapur to Pune and 12157 in the reverse direction, covering a distance of approximately 263 kilometers in about four hours. Its route includes essential stops at Kurduvadi and Daund, facilitating seamless travel across the region.
The Central Railway’s Solapur Division commemorated the silver jubilee, highlighting the train’s contribution to the region’s progress. Over the past quarter-century, the Hutatma Express has facilitated daily commutes, boosted trade and commerce, supported educational pursuits, improved healthcare access, and encouraged tourism, thereby contributing significantly to the socio-economic development of the area.
Currently, the train comprises 16 coaches, including one AC Chair Car, one AC III-Tier Economy Coach, two Sleeper Class Coaches, and ten Second Sitting Coaches, offering a balance of comfort and affordability for a diverse range of passengers. The train derives its name from four martyrs of Solapur’s freedom struggle—Jagannath Shinde, Kurban Hussain, Kisan Sarda, and Mallappa Dhanshetti—whose sacrifices during India’s independence movement continue to inspire generations. The train serves as a moving tribute to these individuals, keeping their patriotism and unwavering dedication to the nation alive in public memory.
The Hutatma Express is a Superfast Express train operating under the Central Railways Zone of Indian Railways. It is one of two dedicated Intercity Trains serving the Pune-Solapur route. The average speed of the train is maintained above 55 km/h, necessitating a Superfast surcharge on its fare as per Indian Railways regulations. The train’s operation has been consistent, running daily and serving as a dependable link between the two cities.
