SRINAGAR: The Meteorological Department has issued a stark warning of significant rainfall, potential flash floods, and rain-induced flooding across various parts of Jammu and Kashmir, expected to persist for the next three days. Authorities have placed South Kashmir and adjoining regions under an Orange Alert, urging residents and authorities to adhere strictly to official weather advisories.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the department’s Director, Mukhtar Ahmad, confirmed the issuance of a weather advisory due to heavy rainfall already recorded in several areas of the Union Territory, with particular emphasis on the Pir Panjal range in the Jammu division. Kashmir also experienced significant showers on Monday morning.
The forecast suggests a continuation of cloudy weather interspersed with light showers in the coming days. Tuesday morning and midday are anticipated to receive low to moderate rainfall across many districts. Some areas within the Jammu division may also experience heavy downpours.
Director Ahmad elaborated that moderate to heavy rainfall is predicted for Kashmir throughout Tuesday and Wednesday. South Kashmir and its adjacent areas are expected to bear the brunt of the most intense precipitation. The potential for significant water accumulation has prompted concerns about flooding in low-lying areas, as well as the immediate threat of flash floods and broader rain-induced inundation.
In addition to flooding risks, the department has flagged a high probability of landslides and mudslides occurring in the hilly terrains of the region. Tourists and transporters have been strongly advised to exercise extreme caution during their travels and to remain vigilant by monitoring the latest weather updates and advisories issued by the authorities.
The Meteorological Department has also recommended the suspension of irrigation activities for the immediate future, given the prevailing adverse weather conditions. This precautionary measure aims to mitigate potential damage to agricultural lands and infrastructure.
The Orange Alert specifically targets South Kashmir and neighbouring areas due to elevated flood risk, with certain parts of North Kashmir also being brought under similar alert conditions. These measures underscore the seriousness of the anticipated weather event.
The prevailing weather pattern is projected to continue its influence until July 23, necessitating continued vigilance and adherence to safety protocols across the Union Territory.
