Bengaluru is set to come alive with music as Church Street, a prominent thoroughfare in the city’s central business district, will now host weekly busking sessions. This initiative aims to provide a dedicated platform for independent musicians and foster the city’s vibrant arts scene.
The new program, “The Music Scene,” launched by the UnboxingBLR Foundation, officially commenced on July 24, 2026, and will feature performances every Saturday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The initiative seeks to revive and promote Bengaluru’s live music culture by bringing performances directly to the streets, moving beyond traditional venues like pubs and ticketed events.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the launch of The Music Scene follows a period where street performances in Bengaluru, particularly on Church Street, had faced increasing scrutiny and restrictions. A notable incident that sparked widespread discussion was the impromptu performance by international singer Ed Sheeran in February 2025, which was halted by the police. This event highlighted the lack of a formal framework for busking in the city, prompting calls for a more organized approach.
The UnboxingBLR Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on culture and city-building, has been instrumental in establishing this platform. According to Malini Goyal, CEO of UnboxingBLR Foundation, the initiative aims to create a democratized platform where talented performers can gain opportunities without needing pre-existing connections. The program is designed to activate public spaces, encourage spontaneous cultural encounters, and enrich the experience of residents and visitors alike.
Church Street, already known for its pedestrian-friendly atmosphere and high footfall, was chosen as the inaugural venue due to its accessibility and vibrant character. The initiative is envisioned as a long-term project, with plans to introduce additional locations across the city in future phases. Selected artists may also receive opportunities to perform at established venues, clubs, and potentially at BLR Hubba, Bengaluru’s city-wide arts and culture festival. Some performers might also gain access to recording studios and mentorship, creating a pathway from street performance to broader industry exposure.
The Music Scene is open to a wide range of artists, including singers, bands, rappers, instrumentalists, and solo performers across various genres. Each session will feature between five and ten artists, with performers allocated up to 20 minutes to showcase their work. A key aspect of the initiative is direct audience support, with performers receiving 100% of their earnings through commission-free tipping systems, including QR-code and UPI-based methods. The artist selection process is designed to be anonymous, prioritizing originality, musical quality, performance ability, and audience engagement over popularity or social media following.
This structured and officially sanctioned busking program aims to bridge the gap in Bengaluru’s performance landscape, creating an organized ecosystem where musicians can connect directly with audiences. By bringing original music into public spaces, The Music Scene intends to make Bengaluru’s streets a significant part of its cultural identity, offering both artists and audiences a new way to experience the city. The initiative is supported by city police and civic stakeholders, ensuring a legal and organized framework for street performances.
The programme is envisioned as an integral part of the Church Street experience, encouraging people to enjoy live music while continuing to explore the street’s offerings, such as its shops, cafes, and restaurants. This approach aims to weave performances into the fabric of the everyday street life, rather than segregating them into conventional concert settings.
The launch of The Music Scene marks a significant step in formalizing and promoting street arts in Bengaluru, aiming to cultivate a more robust and accessible cultural environment for both emerging artists and the public.
