Two unidentified women, suspected of being involved in a gold chain snatching incident, were allegedly assaulted with shoes by a man at the Nagni Mata fair near Nurpur in Himachal Pradesh on Saturday. The incident occurred after local residents apprehended the women, reportedly finding a cutter on their person.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the alleged victims were suspected of snatching a gold chain from another woman at the fair, purportedly using a cutter. Following their apprehension by fair-goers, the husband of the alleged chain-snatching victim reportedly proceeded to beat the two women with a shoe in full public view. The incident was captured on video by onlookers and subsequently circulated widely on social media platforms.
The circulation of these videos drew considerable criticism from many residents, particularly women, who voiced concerns over the public thrashing of the suspects. Many argued that instead of resorting to physical punishment, the women should have been handed over to the police for legal proceedings.
Residents and devotees attending the Nagni Mata fair also shared concerns about a suspected gang of women allegedly active in chain snatching during weekly fairs held on Saturdays in the months of Shravan and Bhadon. They further alleged that inadequate security arrangements were in place to prevent such incidents.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Nurpur, Ilma Afroz, confirmed that the cyber cell was actively verifying the viral videos. She stated that local police had been instructed to identify all individuals involved in the assault on the women. Following a preliminary inquiry, the police registered an FIR on Sunday morning. The FIR has been filed under Sections 126(2), 115(2), and 3(5) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sahinta (BNS) against the persons allegedly involved in the public assault.
The SP emphasized that if a theft had indeed occurred, the establishment of guilt and punishment must be determined through the legal process. She reiterated that the law does not permit any individual to administer punishment to a suspect on the spot. The Nurpur district police have affirmed their commitment to ensuring the safety and dignity of women within the area.
