Services on Bengaluru Metro’s Yellow Line experienced significant disruption for over two hours on Monday evening following a suspected suicide at Huskur Road Metro Station. The incident, which occurred around 5:50 PM, led to the temporary suspension of train operations and impacted peak hour travel for commuters.
Metro Services Severely Affected
According to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the incident unfolded on the up line at Huskur Road Metro Station. Following the event, the train operator alerted the Operations Control Centre (OCC), which promptly initiated emergency response protocols. As a precautionary measure, traction power to the affected section was switched off, and station staff and security personnel rushed to the site. Police were informed, and rescue and recovery operations were conducted in coordination with authorities. The disruption caused train services on the Yellow Line to be halted between 5:55 PM and 8:00 PM. During this period, metro services were confined to the stretch between Electronic City Metro Station and Rashtriya Vidyalaya Road (RV Road) Metro Station. The Yellow Line connects RV Road with Bommasandra.
Restoration Efforts and Passenger Information
BMRCL officials stated that traction power was restored at 7:42 PM after the completion of rescue operations, track clearance, and mandatory safety inspections. Normal passenger movement and full train operations on the Yellow Line were resumed by 7:57 PM. Throughout the disruption, public announcements and passenger information display systems were regularly updated to keep commuters informed. Station staff also provided assistance to passengers seeking alternative travel arrangements. In response to the disruption, BMRCL announced that passengers affected by the curtailed journeys would be refunded their ticket fares. Refunds for online tickets were scheduled to be processed on Tuesday, July 28.
Investigation Underway
The deceased has been identified as Rajesh Hiremath, aged between 30 and 35, a native of Raichur district. Preliminary information suggests that Hiremath had previously worked with a private news channel’s English YouTube platform and had left the organization several months prior. He was reportedly unemployed at the time of the incident. An investigation is currently underway to ascertain the exact circumstances that led him to take the extreme step. Police are examining his mobile phone for any messages that might shed light on his state of mind and the reasons behind his actions.
