SRINAGAR: Tanvir Sadiq, a prominent leader of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) and its chief spokesperson, has directly challenged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding the delayed restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, as well as issues concerning reservations and governance.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Sadiq, also an MLA from Zadibal, criticized the BJP’s recent protests, terming them “drama and theatrics” while the people of the region await the return of their constitutional and political rights. He emphasized that while protests are a democratic right, the BJP should first address the unfulfilled promises made after the erstwhile state was bifurcated into two Union Territories.
“After two years, the simple question remains: where is statehood? They promised delimitation, elections and then restoration of statehood. Elections have happened, but statehood is still nowhere in sight,” Sadiq stated, demanding an explanation for the persistent delay. He urged the BJP to focus on resolving these core issues rather than creating distractions.
The National Conference leader also raised concerns about unresolved reservation-related matters within Jammu and Kashmir, calling for clarity on why files and decisions pertaining to these issues remain pending. He advocated for a thorough and impartial investigation into allegations of backdoor appointments, emphasizing that any wrongdoing should be established through due process rather than political accusations.
“If there has been any wrongdoing, let there be a proper investigation and let the truth come out,” Sadiq urged, suggesting that the BJP possesses the means to initiate such inquiries through appropriate agencies. He alleged that the BJP was leveraging these issues to divert public attention from matters that directly impact the lives of the people.
Sadiq recalled the previous PDP-BJP alliance, stating that the NC had previously cautioned against the BJP joining the government in the region. He added that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are not seeking rhetoric or superficial displays but are seeking the restoration of their fundamental rights, including statehood, respect for their constitutional dignity, and a strengthened political voice.
The NC, he affirmed, would continue to press these issues both within the legislative assembly and in public forums. Sadiq reiterated that the BJP’s recent demonstrations do not mask its failure to address the crucial issue of statehood, a demand that resonates deeply across the region.
