Jammu and Kashmir ACB Arrests Two Police Officers for Accepting Bribe

SRINAGAR, September 1 – The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has apprehended two police officers in Srinagar on charges of demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs. 15,000. The arrests were made on Tuesday following a complaint alleging corruption in closing a case.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the ACB received a written complaint against Sub-Inspector Karanjeet Singh, the investigating officer for Case FIR No. 65/2026 at Police Station Ram Munshi Bagh Srinagar. The complaint stated that Singh, through his accomplice Ravi Jee Bhat, also a Sub-Inspector at the same police station, had demanded illegal gratification from the complainant to have the case registered as “Not Admitted” between the parties.

Upon receiving the complaint, the ACB initiated a verification process to investigate the allegations. The preliminary inquiry found prima facie evidence supporting the demand for illegal gratification by the police officers.

Consequently, Case FIR No. 12/2026 was registered at Police Station ACB Srinagar. The case was filed under Sections 7 and 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, and Section 61(2)BNS. Following the registration, the ACB commenced a detailed investigation.

A dedicated trap team was constituted to conduct the operation. During the investigation, the team successfully caught Ravi Jee Bhat, Sub-Inspector at Police Station Ram Munshi Bagh Srinagar, red-handed. Bhat was apprehended while he was in the process of demanding and accepting the bribe of Rs. 15,000 on behalf of IO PSI Karanjeet Singh from the complainant. The bribe amount was recovered from Bhat’s possession in the presence of independent witnesses.

Ravi Jee Bhat was taken into custody in accordance with the law. Subsequently, his co-conspirator, PSI Karanjeet Singh, was also arrested by the Bureau. The investigation into the matter is ongoing, according to an official statement.
