The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a significant protest march towards the Civil Secretariat on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. Central to the BJP’s protest were allegations of administrative failures and corruption under the National Conference-led administration. Party leaders accused the government of betraying the mandate of the people and pushing the Union Territory into a state of administrative paralysis. Specific issues raised included alleged backdoor appointments, irregularities in government functioning, and a perceived lack of action on development projects. The party also highlighted the government’s electoral promises, particularly concerning the provision of 200 units of free electricity to eligible households, accusing the administration of failing to deliver on this commitment and instead imposing tariff hikes.
The BJP’s planned protest was part of a broader political confrontation between the opposition party and the ruling National Conference. On the same day, the National Conference organized its own demonstrations outside BJP headquarters in Srinagar and Jammu, demanding accountability from the Union government regarding commitments made for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. This synchronized protest action underscored the heightened political tensions and the strategic maneuvering between the two major political forces in the region.
The BJP had previously announced similar protests, including a planned march on August 31, which was postponed due to flood situations in border districts of Rajouri and Poonch. The current demonstration signifies the revival of these protest programs, taking the party’s campaign directly to the seat of the Jammu and Kashmir government. The involvement of party workers and leaders from across the Union Territory indicated a concerted effort by the BJP to amplify its message and exert pressure on the incumbent administration.
The protest concluded with BJP leaders issuing warnings to the National Conference government to address the issues and fulfill its commitments.
