Jammu: Samba SSP Urges Village Defence Guards to Bolster Border Security

Samba district’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Anuj Kumar, has urged members of the Village Defence Guard (VDG) to actively participate in fortifying security along the International Border. He called for the establishment of checkpoints and joint patrolling operations with police at vulnerable points to prevent any attempts by anti-national and anti-social elements to disrupt peace in the region.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the SSP’s directives came during separate meetings held at a Border Police Post (BPP) along the International Border in Samba and at Chilla Danga, falling under the jurisdiction of Police Station Samba. These meetings were organized with the dual aim of strengthening police-public relations and enhancing community involvement in the maintenance of peace and security, according to officials.

VDGs are recognized as armed civilian volunteers who are deployed in vulnerable and border areas to support security forces in identifying and neutralizing threats. SSP Kumar emphasized the critical role of these volunteers in the ongoing efforts to maintain law and order.

During the meetings, the SSP encouraged the local populace to remain vigilant and to extend their full cooperation to the police by promptly sharing any information related to drug peddling and other unlawful activities. He highlighted the pervasive threat that drug abuse poses to society, with a particular concern for the younger generation.

SSP Kumar underscored the necessity for collective action from all stakeholders to effectively eradicate the menace of drug abuse. He issued a stern warning of stringent action against individuals involved in drug trafficking, bovine smuggling, and other criminal enterprises that undermine the region’s peace and stability.

Acknowledging the historical sensitivity of the area, which has experienced militancy-related incidents in the past, the SSP specifically implored VDG members to maintain a heightened state of vigilance. He stressed the importance of close coordination between the VDG members and the police force to effectively counter any emerging threats and ensure the security of the border areas.
