An encounter in the Ashdar Gali area of Budgam district in Jammu and Kashmir has resulted in the death of a militant identified as Yasir, a Pakistani national affiliated with the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). The Jammu and Kashmir Police confirmed his identity on Saturday following a joint operation involving the Indian Army, J&K Police, and CRPF.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the operation, codenamed Operation Ashdar, was launched based on specific intelligence inputs regarding suspicious movement. Security forces challenged the suspected militants, who subsequently opened fire, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire. The operation had been in progress since Thursday, with extensive searches being conducted in the area prior to the encounter.
Following the exchange of fire, one militant was neutralised. An AK-series rifle and other war-like stores were recovered from the encounter site, according to statements from the Army. Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, Sujit Kumar, visited the operation site on Friday to assess the security situation and review the ongoing search efforts.
The identified militant, Yasir, was reportedly involved in various militant activities in the region. Authorities have stated that this operation is part of ongoing efforts to maintain peace and security in Jammu and Kashmir. The joint operations underscore the coordinated approach adopted by different security agencies to counter militant activities based on actionable intelligence.
The area where the encounter took place is known for its rugged terrain, which has historically posed challenges for security forces during counter-insurgency operations. The J&K Police have been actively pursuing leads to dismantle such networks and restore normalcy.
