Amritsar Police have issued a directive mandating the installation of CCTV cameras across all parking lots within the city. The order, aimed at enhancing security and record-keeping, also requires parking contractors to meticulously maintain detailed records of all vehicles and their drivers.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Commissioner of Police Harmanbir Singh Gill has ordered the implementation of this measure. The directive, enforced under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) of 2023, applies to parking facilities situated at key locations including railway stations, bus depots, religious sites, hospitals, and bustling market areas within the Commissionerate’s jurisdiction.
The new regulations stipulate that parking operators must diligently record essential details of vehicles, including number plates and driver information. These records are to be preserved for a period of 45 days and submitted to the respective area police stations on a bi-weekly basis, specifically every 15 days. This measure is intended to facilitate quick identification and retrieval of information in case of any untoward incidents or security breaches.
Furthermore, vehicle owners are now obligated to enter their details into a designated register upon parking. For vehicles requiring parking for periods exceeding one day, parking staff must obtain and retain a photocopy of the driver’s license. An additional layer of security has been introduced with the requirement for police verification of all individuals employed at parking lots. This ensures that personnel handling vehicles and customer information are adequately vetted, contributing to a safer parking environment for the public.
The directive from the Commissioner of Police aims to strengthen the overall security framework of Amritsar by leveraging technological surveillance and robust record management systems. By ensuring comprehensive data collection and regular reporting to law enforcement, the authorities intend to deter potential criminal activities and improve response times in emergencies. The implementation of these measures is expected to enhance accountability among parking lot operators and provide a greater sense of security for citizens utilizing public parking facilities across the city.
