In a significant development for sustainable mobility in India, the country’s electric vehicle (EV) sales have crossed the 3-lakh unit mark for the fourth month in a row. September 2026 recorded an all-time high of 3.3 lakh EV registrations across all segments, indicating a robust and sustained growth trajectory for battery-powered vehicles. This consistent performance underscores the growing consumer confidence and the expanding choices available in the Indian EV market.
Electric Two-Wheelers Lead the Charge
Electric two-wheelers (E2Ws) continue to be the primary driver of EV adoption in India. In September 2026, registrations for E2Ws reached a new monthly high of approximately 2.07 lakh units. This segment has witnessed significant year-on-year growth, with several major manufacturers reporting substantial increases in their sales volumes. TVS Motor, for instance, more than doubled its year-on-year sales to around 54,000 units, reclaiming a position above the 50,000-unit mark after a dip in August. Bajaj also reported more than double its volumes, with approximately 48,400 units sold. Ather Energy recorded around 30,500 units, a notable increase from 19,620 units in September of the previous year. Hero, Ola, and Greaves also contributed significantly, with sales exceeding 24,300, 13,450, and 9,300 units, respectively. The dominance of E2Ws highlights their central role in daily commuting and last-mile transportation in India.
Electric Passenger Vehicles Gain Traction
The electric passenger vehicle (e-PV) segment also achieved a new monthly record in September 2026, with sales reaching approximately 36,000 units. This figure is nearly double the volume recorded in September 2025, signaling a growing acceptance of electric cars despite their higher upfront costs. Tata Motors remained the leader in the e-PV segment, registering about 14,712 units, a substantial increase from 7,340 units in the same month last year. Mahindra secured the second position with 7,742 units sold, widening its lead over JSW MG Motor, which sold 5,226 units. VinFast also showed a significant uptick in registrations, with 2,960 units compared to just six units in September 2025.
Electric Three-Wheelers Show Resilience
Electric three-wheeler (E3W) sales also demonstrated resilience in September 2026, bouncing back to over 86,000 units. This marks an increase from approximately 80,000 units in August and 88,315 units in July. In September 2025, E3W sales stood at 61,434 units. The consistent performance of the E3W segment further reinforces the shift towards electric mobility across different vehicle categories.
Sustained Growth Factors
The sustained sales momentum in the EV market is attributed to several key factors. A wider choice of models across various price points is making EVs more accessible to a broader range of consumers. Furthermore, continuous improvements in charging infrastructure and advancements in battery technology are helping to alleviate range anxiety. The growing consumer confidence in electric mobility, coupled with supportive government policies and increasing environmental awareness, is collectively contributing to the accelerated adoption of EVs in India. The consistent sales performance above the 3-lakh-unit threshold suggests that EVs are moving onto a higher-volume trajectory, poised for continued expansion in the coming years.
